The International Ocean Carbon Coordination Project (IOCCP)

IOCCP Activities

The following activites were initiated by the IOCCP Scientific Steering Group at its 2nd Session, 10 April 2007. Download the SSG-II Report.

A 6-month progress report on these actions was provided to the Scientific Steering Group in October 2007. Download the SSG-II Progress Report.

Guide of Best Practices Work with PICES to finalize the Guide of Best Practices on Oceanic CO2 Measurement and Data Reporting, including electronic printing and limited hard-copy editions. SSG members Hansell and Lee to develop SOPs for organic carbon variables to include in the Guide of Best Practices.
Completed (February 2008). See Standards / Methods page.
Training Workshops The IOCCP will work with the EU EPOCA project (funding pending) and the Southeast Asia Regional Carbon Project to develop training workshops based on the new Guide of Best Practices.
Scheduled for early 2009 under the direction of Richard Bellerby for EPOCA.
Hydrography

The IOCCP, CLIVAR, and the SIC developed the Global Ocean Ship-based Hydrographic Investigations Panel (GO-SHIP), an Advisory Group to develop guidelines for a coordinated and comprehensive ship-based repeat hydrography program, post-CLIVAR. The first meeting was held from 1-2 November 2007, Victoria BC. The update of the WOCE hydrographic manual is underway and should be completed by mid-2009. The draft strategy will be circulated for community input in the 2nd half of 2008.
see GO-SHIP page.

Ocean Interior Synthesis
Groups

Work with CarboOcean and PICES to develop a web-based information resource on the Atlantic and Pacific synthesis activities.

Global Surface CO2 Data Set Comparisons

SSG Chair Sabine will lead a coparison of global data sets currently being used by different groups to generate seasonal flux maps with a view to reaching international consensus on development of a standard global surface CO2 dataset. SSG Member Dorothee Bakker will lead a group to review the secondary qc for this global data set.
See Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) information on Synthesis pages.

Workshop Development:
Global Seasonal Air-Sea Flux
Investigate the interest and feasibility of hosting a workshop on methods to estimate global seasonal pCO2 flux as well as methods to estimate surface CO2 based on satellite data and proxy techniques.  This may also include a section on "ocean CO2 from space" including reviews of proxy methods, CASIX-type work, and neural network techniques. This workshop would also decide on the regular development of data products.
Will be reviewed after SOCAT project advances and in cooperation with IOCCG for 2009.
Surface CO2 Regional Synthesis Groups

The IOCCP will provide communication and coordination support for the regional synthesis groups established at the April 2007 Surface Ocean Carbon Variability and Vulnerability workshop in order to facilitate their progress and provide a global point of coordination amongst the regional groups. This work is being carried out as part of the SOCAT project.
Download the Workshop Report that established these groups
See Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) information on Synthesis pages.

Workshop Development:
Carbon and Biogeochemistry Time Series

Investigate the interest and feasibility of developing a workshop to enhance coordination and scientific advocacy for carbon and biogeochemistry time series work.
Changing Times: An international ocean biogeochemical time-series workshop,; planned for November 5-7 2008, Scripps Institute of Oceanography; co-sponosred by OceanSITES, POGO, NOAA, and the US OCB program.

Workshop Development:
Recommended Practices
for metadata / data reporting for process studies.

Investigate the feasibility of developing a small workshop to develop recommended practices for metadata / data reporting in process studies, with a special emphasis on coastal carbon issues.  Investigate the interest and ways of developing a directory of carbon-relevant process studies (including links to data from completed programs) with other groups, especially the SIC.
Under discussion with global research programs.
Ocean Carbon Sensors

Work with the SOLAS-IMBER Carbon Coordination Group, the GCOS-GOOS-WCRP Ocean Observations Panel for Climate (OOPC) and other observing system partners to assist in the development of an international conference, "OceanSensors08".
Visit the OceanSensors08 web-site.

Develop an inventory of most often used ocean carbon sensors on the IOCCP site, and provide the community with news and information related to these.
Completed. See Sensor Directory.
