Hydrography Manual Review

In the 15 years since the original publication of the WOCE Hydrographic Programme Manual, many methods and techniques have changed.  One of the objectives of GO-SHIP is to review and update this manual.

Manual chapters are on-line for open community review at: http://cdiac3.ornl.gov/hydrography/. You may download the documents and send your comments either directly to the authors or post your comments on-line for other reviewers. For this, please contact Alex Kozyr to obtain a password (ako at ornl.gov)

This version of the manual will take advantage of several partnerships with expert groups who are developing or revising methods manuals and best practices guides for specific techniques or variables:

  • Underway surface measurements will be done in partnership with the Global Ocean Surface Underway Data (GOSUD) Pilot Project (http://www.ifremer.fr/gosud/) which is currently revising the existing manual for that program (Bob Keeley and Loic Petit de la Villeon)
  • Calculation of the physical properties of seawater will be carried out in partnership with the SCOR / IAPSO Working Group 127 on Thermodynamics and Equation of State of Seawater (http://www.jhu.edu/scor/wg127.htm ) (Trevor McDougall and Frank Millero)
  • Nutrients standards will be done in partnership with the International Nutrient Scale System (INSS) group, which is revising the manual for the GEOTRACES program (http://www.mri-jma.go.jp/Dep/ge/RMOS/RMOSworkshop.html) (David Hydes and Michio Aoyama)
  • A revision of the 1994 Handbook for ocean carbon measurements was just published this February, co-sponsored by PICES and the IOCCP (http://cdiac.ornl.gov/oceans/Handbook_2007.html ) (Dickson, Sabine, and Christian).
