Ocean Carbon Open House presentations on-line.

The IOCCP hosted an "Ocean Carbon Open House" at the International CO2 Conference on Wednesday evening, September 28. The purpose of the Open House was to bring together ocean carbon scientists to share information about major ocean carbon research programs and to discuss potential collaborations and coordination activities. The format of the Open House included a 5 minute overview of each program with a very brief question and answer period, followed by a 40-45 minute open discussion. About 70 people attended the session. The presentations made at the Open House are now available on-line and include:

SOLAS/IMBER Carbon Implementation Group - Truls Johannessen (ppt 8.5MB)
E.U. CarboOcean Project - Christoph Heinze (ppt 555KB)
PICES Carbon Section - Andrew Dickson (ppt 55KB)
NACP / OCCC Coastal Carbon Program - Nick Bates (ppt 4.0MB)
Japanese Carbon Programs / PACIFICARBON - Toshi Saino (ppt 4.5MB)
U.S. Ocean Carbon and Climate Change Program - Scott Doney (ppt 6.5MB)
Australian Carbon Programs- Bronte Tilbrook (ppt 4.5MB)
CASIX (U.K.) - Dorothee Bakker (ppt 8.6MB)
U.S. Repeat Hydrography Program - Dick Feely (ppt 2.2MB)
IOCCP Overview (view as slideshow)- Maria Hood (ppt 1.8MB)

The Open House highlighted the enormous amount of ocean carbon activities currently being carried out by national and regional groups and coordinated through several global framework programs. Participants in the Open House were also particularly interested in knowing about plans for coastal carbon observations, stimulated by the presentation of the NACP / OCCC coastal carbon program. The discussions also highlighted the interest and need for standardization of methods and data management in order to ensure that the results of these programs are comparable.

IOCCP holds its first Scientific Steering Group meeting

Beginning in July of this year, the governing bodies of SCOR and IOC approved new terms of reference for the IOCCP, making it a standing project, and endorsing the establishment of a Scientific Steering Group to guide the activities of the IOCCP. On October 1st, the SSG met for the first time to discuss on-going activities of the IOCCP and to discuss priorities for the coming year. Member of the SSG include:

Chris Sabine (Chair)
Masao Fukasawa (Hydrography)
Bronte Tilbrook (Surface pCO2)
Nick Bates (Time Series)
Helmuth Thomas (Coastal Observations)
Cindy Lee (Process Studies)
Dorothee Bakker (Dataset Development)
Cyril Moulin (Ocean Colour and Carbon Cycle Modeling)
Truls Johannessen (SOLAS)
Arne Koertzinger (IMBER)

As mentioned at the IOCCP Open House, the IOCCP has no membership and all activities are open to the community for participation. The SSG report is now available on-line. We invite everyone to review the action items and to participate in the development and implementation of activities of interest to you.

International Repeat Hydrography Meeting Nov 14-16: an update

JAMSTEC, the IOCCP, and CLIVAR co-hosted an International Repeat Hydrography Workshop at the Shonan Village Conference Center in Kamakura, Japan, November 14-16. The workshop brought together 49 participants from 11 countries, with expertise including ocean carbon and biogeochemistry, physical hydrography, modeling and data assimilation, and the Argo program. The workshop reviewed the science framework and implementation status of post-WOCE hydrography, provided guidance for a more coordinated system of data and information management, and established plans to begin data synthesis activities. A web-site has been developed for the workshop, and provides further details about workshop objectives and goals, the agenda, and the participant list. The workshop report is in preparation and will be made available as soon as possible.

Further Reading: visit the Symposium Web-site for further background information, the agenda and participant list.

GLODAP Results and Data Published
" During the 1990s, ocean sampling expeditions were carried out as part of WOCE, JGOFS, and the Ocean Atmosphere Carbon Exchange Study (OACES). Most of the cruises included various inorganic carbon species among the suite of routinely measured parameters. Both during and after the field work, a group of U.S. scientists collaborated to synthesize the data into easily usable and readily available products. This collaboration is known as the Global Ocean Data Analysis Project (GLODAP)." (GLODAP 2005). The publication (manual and CD) includes information about the project, database construction, data evaluation, derived values, gridded products, lessons learned, and on-going research. Also included are reprints of relevant publications using the GLODAP data products.

The authors* have decided to publish the current GLODAP dataset to ensure that it is properly documented in the literature. However, GLODAP will continue to improve and expand the dataset for the foreseeable future, continuing with data assembly in collaboration with other programs (e.g., the CARINA data) and including other parameters (Helium / tritium data). They will also make a special effort to include regions with sparse data coverage, including the Arctic and marginal seas.

* Chris Sabine, Bob Key, Alex Kozyr, Dick Feely, Rik Wanninkhof, Frank Millero, Tsung-Hung Peng, John Bullister, and Kitack Lee.

EGU 2006 Special Sessions for Ocean Carbon issues

We would like to bring to your attention 2 special sessions at the 2006 EGU meeting that may be of interest to many of you. The EGU meeting will be held in Vienna, Austria, 02-07 April 2006. We encourage submissions to this session from a broad geographic, thematic and instrumental range. The absolute abstract deadline is 13 January 2006.

1. BG6.02: Ocean acidification: chemistry, paleo-analogues, response of organisms and ecosystems, and modelling"
Outline:
The aim of this session is to review recent data on the chemical, biological, and geological consequences of rising atmospheric CO2 and resulting ocean acidification. Conceptual, experimental and modelling contributions are welcome and all time scales will be considered.
Conveners:
Jean-Pierre Gattuso (mailto:gattuso@obs-vlfr.fr)
Joanie Kleypas (mailto:kleypas@ucar.edu)
Jim Orr (mailto:James.Orr@cea.fr)
Ulf Riebesell (mailto:uriebesell@ifm-geomar.de)

2. OS7: Ocean Carbon Source and Sink Assessments.
This session will highlight progress towards assessing ocean carbon sources and sinks over the time frame of plus/minus 200 years from present day. Of special interest is our ability to quantify global and regional sources and sinks of anthropogenic carbon using both observations and models. New modelling and observational approaches aimed at characterizing present-day air-sea fluxes of CO2 will also be presented. The session covers content relative to Themes 1 and 2 of the European Integrated Project CarboOcean. Namely: 1. North Atlantic and Southern Ocean CO2 air-sea exchange on a seasonal-to-interannual scale; and 2. Detection of decadal-to-centennial Atlantic and Southern Ocean carbon inventory changes. However contributions are welcome that address other regions and the global scale.
Conveners:
Doug Wallace (dwallace@ifm-geomar.de)
Rik Wanninkhof (Rik.Wanninkhof@noaa.gov)
Dorothee Bakker (D.Bakker@uea.ac.uk)
Maria Hood (m.hood@unesco.org)
