Mediterranean Workshop on Integrated Coastal Zone Management:Problems and perspectives - ISMAL ,Algier 6,7 & 8 June 2006 (1st announcement) 15/11/05

The Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), a relatively new concept, has the sea-land strip and interface as field of observations, investigations and interventions; it is an eminently interdisciplinary field. ICZM is more and more considered by both theoreticians and practitioners to be essential for managing sustainably coastal and marine environment.

For this respects, ICZM open a field for research and development of methods and approachs adapted to solving problems raised by the development, protection and conservation of marine and coastal resources.

In this context and during the last years, the theory and practice produced many interesting and prolific works. They put in obvious important issues and suggested management principles and appropriate actions. This workshop is dedicated to turn to profit the results achieved and to promote experience sharing between scientists and practitioners of ICZM at, the national, North African and Mediterranean levels.

The workshop will be organized in thematic workgroup and synthesis session in plenary.

Contents

Three main themes will lead the workshop:

1.     The natural environment: parameters and process of the state and the evolution of the marine and coastal environment.

Marine and coastal hydrodynamic; Marine ecology (benthic and pelagic environments); Coastal and marine geology Geochemical and physicochemical parameters

2. Planning and management: theories and practices for developing and conserving this environment and its resources.

Drainage basin and physiographic units

Physical methods for defence and protection of the coastline; The management of  halieutic stocks and the development of fisheries; regulatory tools : marine and coastal planning law, institutions and the other aspects of the "best practices"; The management of marine and coastal sensitive environment; The management and promotion of cultural and historical heritage (marine and coastal); integrated management of the water resources  (conventional and non conventional); Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing applications for ICZM, georeferenced data availability, etc…

3.      The socio environmental dynamics: the littoralisation and its implication for the marine and coastal environment and its resources.

The urbanization and the urban coastal dynamic; The human activities: fishing, aquaculture, coastal agriculture, tourism, industry, harbour activities; wastewater disposal and its impact on the environment (aquatic pollution); Solid waste pollution;atmospheric pollution and its implications (air quality, sea-atmosphere exchange); The improvements and their impacts on the coastline.

Goals:

  • This gathering of ICZM theoreticians and practitioners intend to:
  • Contribute to the development of methods and practices of ICZM in the Mediterranean region.
  • Identify and discuss promoting (or limiting) factors for setting ICZM for the North African coasts.
  • Present ICZM experiences in different countries.
  • Initiate (or strengthen) a partnership process aiming to promote ICZM in the Mediterranean basin particularly in its south part (North Africa).

 Deadlines (as a rough guide)

  • sending abstracts and posters: January the 15th, 2006
  • sending of final papers:            February the 20th, 2006
  • Selection and confirmation of participation: March, 2006
  • final programme :  April, 2006

British Institute in Eastern Africa-British Museum & Zanzibar Department of Archives, Museums and Antiquities Maritime Heritage Interdisciplinary Conference on the Maritime Heritage of the Western Indian Ocean in Comparative Perspective to be held in Marc 15/11/05

The aims of this conference are to examine the maritime heritage, cultural traditions and historical trajectory of the various populations bordering the Western Indian Ocean, from Somalia in the north to South Africa and Madagascar in the south, and including the various offshore islands – such as the Seychelles, Comores, Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia – and to compare and contrast these with other maritime regions and cultures, including those of other sections of the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf, and Western Atlantic fringe. The more specific objectives are to establish whether different maritime cultures and societies have certain characteristics in common, the extent to which these have been shaped by broadly comparable historical events and processes, and to discuss the challenges facing the conservation and presentation of maritime heritage in these different regions.

Disciplinary Scope: The conference is intended to be multi-disciplinary in scope. It is expected that participants will be drawn mostly from the social sciences (e.g. anthropology, human geography, ethnography, African studies) and the humanities (e.g. archaeology, history, African languages & literature). Submissions from specialists in the marine sciences (e.g. oceanography, marine ecology, marine geomorphology) will also be considered where these have a clear bearing on an understanding of cultural and/or historical questions.

Themes: The Conference will be divided into parallel sessions grouped around particular themes of cross-disciplinary significance and relevance.  Where possible, sessions will include papers that offer a comparative perspective from a range of different maritime regions.  Among the themes which could be considered are the following:

Ø       History and ethnography of boat building traditions

Ø       Maritime societies as cultural brokers

Ø       The militarization of the sea and its social and material consequences

Ø       The historical ecology of island communities

Ø       The poetics of maritime culture

Ø       Challenges facing the preservation of maritime cultures and heritage

Ø       Fishing – just a subsistence strategy or more a way of life?

Additional suggestions are welcome!

Mangrove Forest Ecology, Management and Restoration training workshop, 20-23 February 2006, Hollywood, Florida, USA. 15/11/05

The third "Mangrove Forest Ecology, Management and Restoration" training workshop will be held at the Anne Kolb Nature Center, in Hollywood, Florida, USA, 21-24 February 2005.

The training site is within a 500 ha mangrove restoration project at West Lake Park operated by Broward County. The award-winning project was designed by Roy R. "Robin" Lewis III, who will be teaching the course. The workshop includes an introduction to mangrove forest ecology, management options and problems, and restoration design issues. Case studies of 5 successful mangrove restoration projects, and several unsuccessful projects will be discussed. Field trips will be taken within the 500 ha West Lake Park mangrove restoration project (now 16 years old) and a new project just two years old, for a comparison. The emphasis of the course will be on cost-effective successful mangrove management and restoration.
